Trafford MV Walking Rugby looking for new members in Sale

Sporting activities for older adults are on the rise as many seek to stay active and fit, moving beyond passive pastimes like watching TV, visiting coffee shops and reading in libraries. Walking sports are gaining popularity, adding a bit of competition to the walking habit. Walking versions of football, netball and rugby have become fixtures in the local sporting scene.

Walking rugby at Trafford MV Sports Club

In Sale, walking rugby has been a fixture for over five years at Trafford MV Sports Club (M33 6LR). Every Wednesday evening, regardless of the weather, a dedicated group of nearly 50 members gather for an hour of sport followed by a social get-together in the clubhouse. Typically, up to 20 players attend each session.

What is walking rugby?

Walking rugby is a simplified version of Rugby Union that, as the name suggests, does not involve running or jogging – just walking as quickly as you can. The game emphasises evasion rather than contact, with tackling reduced to a two-handed touch above the waist, minimising physical contact. There is no kicking of the ball and the objective is to move your team forward to score a try while passing the ball backward. Even if you've never played before, you’ll quickly get the hang of it. Players are encouraged to play at their own pace and can rest if it gets too energetic. Rules and in-game coaching are provided for novices. Engaging fully in the game will surely get your step count up and the focus is on enjoyment and exercise rather than winning or losing.

National walking rugby events

Walking rugby groups are spread across the country. Recently, Trafford MV participated in a walking rugby festival in Kendal, Cumbria, attended by teams from Lincolnshire, Scotland, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Kendal. Nearly 80 players participated, with the eldest being 82 years old.

Join Trafford MV walking rugby

Rugby experience is not required to play walking rugby – just enthusiasm and a willingness to join in. The standard age for participants is over 50, but anyone interested in trying walking rugby is welcome. The group meets at Trafford MV Sports Club, Finny Bank Road, Sale M33 6LR, on Wednesday evenings at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Since the games are played outdoors, participants are advised to dress for the weather and, if possible, wear studded footwear or training shoes with good grip, as the grass can be slippery even when dry.

A friendly and welcoming group

The group looks forward to welcoming new players in the coming weeks as the warmer, drier summer weather arrives. The members are friendly and enjoy their social time as much as the walking rugby. So don't be shy – it's well worth a TRY! 🏉
