TGI Fridays enters administration
Restaurant chain TGI Fridays, the well-known American diner, has gone into administration, putting 4,500 jobs and 87 outlets at risk. This includes its location in Sale on Cross Street.
Hostmore, which runs the UK franchise for TGI Fridays, has appointed administrators and delisted its ordinary shares after struggling to find a "lasting solution" to save the business amid heavy losses and mounting debts, it said today (18 September).
It has put 87 of the chain's restaurants on the market and hopes to complete a sale by the end of September, which would help to secure jobs.
At the height of its popularity, TGI Fridays was a go-to spot for casual dining, offering American-style dishes like burgers, ribs and loaded fries, along with a wide selection of cocktails. In more recent years, however, the fortunes of TGI Fridays have faded. Hostmore revealed earlier this year that sales in the UK had dropped by over 10 per cent, reflecting the chain's struggle to maintain its market position amid increasing competition from other casual dining options.
TGI Fridays has been a staple of the UK dining scene for nearly 40 years, with the Sale branch first opening in December 1990.
For now, TGI Fridays' restaurants will remain open as usual, but the coming weeks will determine the fate of this restaurant chain in Sale and beyond.
