Sale Town in Bloom: Local pupils cultivate edible garden in the town centre
Children from St Mary's Primary School in Sale have brought new life to the town centre with their latest project: creating an edible herb planter as part of the Sale Town in Bloom initiative.
Members of the school's ECO Council transformed a planter at the entrance of Stanley Square into a vibrant, edible feast, contributing to both the aesthetic and culinary delight of the community.
The planter, now packed with bay, lavender, borage, sage, thyme, marjoram and nasturtium, not only adds a splash of green but also provides herbs that can be used in local kitchens.
Sale Town in Bloom is a community-driven project aiming to enhance the town’s green spaces. This initiative has rallied local residents, businesses and volunteers to revitalise Sale with greenery, ensuring it flourishes throughout spring and summer.
St Mary’s headteacher Wayne Hitchcock expressed his pride, stating, “The children very much enjoyed the trip out and doing something useful for the community.”
The project also received essential support from Suez, who provided compost for the planter free of charge. Volunteers have worked hard to secure sponsorship and coordinate efforts with Trafford Council. Their collaboration aims to introduce various green spaces, including wild gardens, flower beds and edible planters like the one created by St Mary’s pupils.
This project exemplifies the community spirit, environmental awareness and local pride of Sale. Residents, businesses and volunteers are encouraged to join this green revolution, contributing through sponsorship, funding or hands-on involvement.
