Sale resident takes on 210km run-cycle challenge to support Down's Syndrome Association

Sale resident Felix Mulderrig is taking on a taxing physical challenge, aiming to run and cycle a combined 210 kilometres by 21 March for charity.

The challenge is not only a personal test but also a charitable initiative to raise funds and awareness for the Down's Syndrome Association (DSA). The end date of Felix’s challenge coincides with World Down Syndrome Day.

Felix's motivation for this extraordinary feat stems from his personal connection to Down's syndrome. Reflecting on the birth of his younger brother, Caspar, who has Down’s syndrome, Felix shared the initial challenges and uncertainties faced by his family: "When my younger brother was born, we were warned of all the potential risks, challenges and downsides (no pun intended...) of what Down's might mean. What we weren't told about was how amazing it would be having this little git in our lives."

With a mission to challenge stereotypes and support the Down's syndrome community, Felix plans to cover the 210km distance throughout January, February and March. The significance of the distance lies in the symbolic representation of the 21st chromosome, as Down's syndrome is caused by a duplicated copy of this chromosome.

Felix expressed his gratitude for the support his family received when his brother was born. "The DSA help families who have received a diagnosis by giving them support and allowing them to celebrate their new arrival properly. For context, when Caspar was born, we had people acting like there had been a death in the family rather than a new arrival," he shared.

Beyond emotional support, the DSA plays a crucial role in facilitating care for individuals with Down's syndrome, connecting them with peer groups and assisting in securing work opportunities. Felix emphasises the positive impact that individuals with Down's syndrome have on their families and communities.

As part of his fundraising efforts, Felix has set up a donation page at JustGiving, encouraging the local community to donate to this cause.

Felix encourages everyone to join him in supporting the DSA, saying: "I'll be running, cycling, and sometimes carrying a kid with Down's 210km through Jan, Feb and March to raise funds and awareness.

“Let's make a difference together and celebrate the extraordinary individuals who bring joy to our lives."
