Poundland is to close its Sale store next month – just eight months after opening.

The store, which opened in October 2023, took over the unit previously occupied by Wilko, which went into administration in September 2023. Poundland quickly revamped the location and launched under its brand.

Yesterday (24 May), Poundland staff and neighbouring businesses in Stanley Square were informed of the potential closure. The store is set to close on 16 June.

Poundland acquired 71 former Wilko stores and has been evaluating which locations to keep in the long term. Recently, Poundland closed stores in Eccles and Salford, citing profitability issues and the excessive size of some units. The Stanley Square location falls into the latter category; its large size has negatively impacted sales per square foot and overall profitability and they have struggled to use the space fully.

Poundland will also close its store in the Stamford Quarter in Altrincham on 16 June.
