Sale school extension approved

Plans for extension works to Brentwood School and Community College, Cherry Lane, Sale have been approved.

The approval will mean an increase in the capacity of the school, which caters for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), providing 80 more places over the next eight years.

The planning application sought approval for plans for a single-storey extension, internal reconfiguration and various external alternations. The plans would see a new teaching wing added to the school, boosting capacity and positively impacting families in Trafford.

During the application process, the council received five letters of objection from nearby residents, most of whom said that the access road on Cherry Lane already has problems with the excess traffic at the start and finish of school. However, the proposals gained unanimous approval from Trafford’s planning committee at a meeting in June 2024. Work is now expected to begin on-site in summer 2024.

Sustainability is said to be at the heart of the new proposals, which include the installation of air-sourced heat pumps and solar panels in line with Trafford Council’s corporate priority to address the climate emergency.

Councillor Karina Carter, executivemember for children and young people at Trafford Council commented: “We know that demand for SEND school places is rising in Trafford so this increased capacity will directly benefit families in Trafford. This is a well-designed, environmentally sensitive extension of a popular school. We look forward to seeing this development take shape in the coming years.”
