Ex-City goalkeeper to visit Sale to promote autobiography
Former Manchester City goalkeeper Alex Williams MBE will be sharing stories about his life in football at Ashton on Mersey Golf Club, Sale, on Wednesday 06 December.
Alex recently released an autobiography, ‘You Saw Me Standing Alone’. The book, which takes its name from the famous Manchester City song, Blue Moon, touches on numerous topics such as his upbringing, his footballing career, the racism he faced while playing and some of the community work he has done over the years.
Alex overcame horrific racist abuse to pioneer City’s acclaimed community programme, which he led for 33 years before retiring in August.
Alex, who grew up in Moss Side and Levenshulme, always dreamt of playing football for City, his boyhood club. In the 1980-81 season, this dream became a reality when, aged 19, he made his debut for the club in a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at Maine Road.
He would go on to make 125 appearances for the club across six years before his playing career ended in the late 80s due to a persistent injury.
Alex’s autobiography includes tributes from Noel Gallagher, Andy Burnham and a foreword by Pep Guardiola. He will sign copies of ‘You Saw Me Standing Alone’ on the night. The Q&A session will start at 6.15 pm, followed by Aston Villa vs Manchester City game shown in the clubhouse. Non-members are welcome and admission is free.
