Founder Alex Shaw, a former professional rugby player, turned his hobby of roasting coffee into a business and Kickback Coffee now has three sites in the northwest.

Following his rugby career, during which he played for teams including Sale Sharks, Alex had a huge passion for coffee and decided to give himself a shot at turning it into a business.

“I visited a roastery in Nottingham,” he told Life in Sale. “They told me you can roast your beans with a popcorn machine, so I bought a second-hand one and it’s grown from there.”

It turned out to be an expensive hobby. “I started to sell the coffee at pop-up farmers markets to ‘feed’ my hobby and then friends and family started to buy from me, so I thought I might as well see if I can turn it into a business.”

The business – and the coffee – has been a success, and Alex, who lived in Sale before relocating to his current home in Altrincham, is very happy with the location of his third site.

“We looked at a number of units in Sale for the expansion, but this one felt like the right choice. We’re aiming to be more than a coffee shop; we want to build an adventure coffee company and with the likes of Sale Water Park so close by, we’re hoping to build a local community of people who love the great outdoors. Similar to our other sites, this one in Sale can become a hub for people who love cycling, running, rambling – generally those who want to be outside!”

Kickback Coffee now employs 25 people across its three sites, including Alex Vane (pictured above), who will manage the Sale site. Site number one was the original roastery at The Old Brickworks near Pott Shrigley, which opened in 2020.

The second site lies in Altrincham, under The Arches on Viaduct Road. It opened during the lockdowns of 2021 and is perfectly positioned to attract customers walking and cycling down the canal.

It’s clear that Alex is passionate about his products. “We produce speciality coffee, we source our products with due care and attention and know exactly where everything comes from. We’re roasters, so we’re not just making a cup of coffee – we’re completely obsessed with coffee and we know many of our customers are too!”

Alex hopes to expand into more sites in the future, but for now, is happy to be part of the Sale community and is hoping that Kickback Coffee will become the go-to place for coffee obsessives for M33.

If you’re craving a sweet treat, Kickback Coffee in Sale Moor has a selection of baked goods available including brownies, blondies and flapjacks. At weekends, a wider selection of freshly baked pastries are available, all baked in-house at Alex’s bakery Flour Water Salt in Macclesfield.
