Tribute night to Sale-born Manchester City player Ian "Spider" Mellor
A special tribute night will be held this Friday (18 October) at Sale Sports Club to honour the life and legacy of Ian "Spider" Mellor, a cherished figure in Manchester City's history and a beloved member of the Sale community.
The events starts at 7.30pm and will feature Spider's son Neil Mellor, who will share his personal memories of growing up as a boyhood City fan and his experiences in professional football.
Neil, who served as a ball boy and was part of Manchester City’s Academy, faced a significant setback when he was released by the club at 16. Despite the disappointment, he went on to have a remarkable career, including being part of Liverpool's Champions League-winning squad in 2005. The event promises to be a heartfelt remembrance of Ian, who played for Manchester City in the early 1970s alongside legends like George Best, Bobby Moore and Kevin Keegan.
Ian Mellor, who passed away in May this year at the age of 74, penned his autobiography titled "Spider", which was published just days before his death. The book chronicles his journey through professional football and aims to raise awareness of Amyloidosis, the illness that impacted his final days. Copies of "Spider" will be available for purchase at the event for a suggested donation of £15, with all proceeds contributing to a dedicated room in Ian's memory at the new St Ann’s Hospice in Heald Green, Cheshire.
Admission to the tribute night is free, with no tickets required, making it accessible for all who wish to celebrate Ian's remarkable life and contributions to football. The bar will open at 7pm, allowing attendees to gather and reflect before the event begins.
Join the Mellor family and the wider community in celebrating one of Sale’s sporting heroes and supporting a worthy cause.
