GET Free Books: Budding writers in Sale encouraged to enter competition

Calling all aspiring writers in Sale and surrounding areas – it's time to let your imagination run wild!

Sale’s Get Free Bookshop and Blue SCI are thrilled to announce their much-anticipated annual community writing competition.

Craft your tale

The competition is open to children aged 9+ and adults, with each age category focusing on a different theme. 

For a chance to win, write a story based on the following age group themes:

  • 9-12 years theme: 'Words are magic' (up to 500 words)

  • 13-16 years theme: 'Words have consequences' (up to 1000 words)

  • 17 years and over theme: 'I turned the page' (up to 1500 words)

⚠️ Writers must use the theme’s wording outlined above in their story! 

How to enter 

Send in your story as a Word document to getfreebookshop@hotmail.com. The subject line should be the title of your piece. The competition is open from 08 - 18 February 2024, so don’t miss your chance to be a part of this literary celebration!

Your stories will be in the capable hands of local author Dave Spence, one of the competition’s judges, and the winning stories will be published by Get Free Books. 

Wonners will be announced at an awards evening at Coppice Library & Wellbeing Centre, Sale M33 4ND.

Writing competition terms and conditions 

  • All entries must be original work, written by the author. Plagiarism will not be accepted.

  • Only unpublished manuscripts will be considered. This includes self-published, social media and websites.

  • Copyright remains with the author, but all winners must permit Get Free Bookshop and Blue Sci to publish their manuscripts for a period of 12 months.

  • No members, or family of, Get Free Bookshop or Blue SCI can enter the competition.

  • Manuscripts will be shortlisted and then judged blind – do NOT write your name on the manuscript.

  • Judge's decision is final.

  • Only one entry is allowed.

  • Under 17s require written consent from parent or guardian.

  • ALL entries MUST BE submitted as a WORD document, with the title of the document being the title of your story.

  • ALL entries must be in 12-point font, using Times New Roman.

  • Please email your entry to getfreebookshop@hotmail.com with the subject being the title of your piece.

  • Please state your name, date of birth, address and telephone number in the body of your email.

  • If your entry is shortlisted, you will be contacted.
By submitting an entry, you are agreeing to all of the above.

  • All entries must be in English.
