Veranda Mediterranean Restaurant on Northenden Road showcases the vibrant flavours of the Eastern Mediterranean. Our recent visit to try their new menu showed us that its talented chefs mix traditional dishes with modern twists.

For starters, we opted for hot and cold meze. The hummus (£4.60) was a standout dish, with cooked chickpeas blended with tahineh, lemon juice and garlic, topped with a generous drizzle of olive oil. Served with your choice of pitta or flatbread, this starter was smooth, rich and moreish. I now know that not all hummus is created equal – the temptation to ask for another portion to take home was strong! The grilled halloumi (£5.50) did not disappoint either, offering chunky slices of cheese grilled with a perfect char, enhancing its flavour without the dreaded rubbery texture that often plagues this dish.

For mains, we indulged in the chicken tawook (£13.50) and the shish kebab (£15.95). The chicken tawook arrived with succulent chicken breast marinated in a robust red tomato sauce, infused with pepper paste, herbs and spices, all grilled on a skewer. The shish kebab boasted tender chunks of lamb, also grilled on skewers and each bite was a testament to the quality and care put into the preparation. Both dishes came with generous portions, and for the price, they were remarkably reasonable. Accompaniments included a choice of chips, rice or a fresh Lebanese salad, ensuring there was something to suit every palate.

As for service, on our visit it was nothing short of great. Our server was attentive yet unobtrusive, with a warm and friendly demeanour which made us feel welcome, even as the restaurant grew busier.

Veranda’s menu is full of authentic Eastern Mediterranean dishes. Alongside popular casseroles like fasoulieh (a hearty white bean and meat stew), fateh al-makdous (stuffed aubergines) and maklubeh (an Arabic rice dish), there’s a wide selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Simply ask your server for the gluten-free menu upon arrival.

The drinks menu offers a typical selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, including a straightforward and reasonably priced wine list.

An bonus is the early bird menu, available on weekdays from 4-6pm for just £12.99. This includes a starter and a main, with plenty of choices available from the main menu. For an additional £4.00, you can round off your early bird meal with a dessert, choosing from muhalabiya (a sweet milk pudding), ice cream or crème caramel.

Since opening in 2021, Veranda has become a beloved spot for those in the know, with regular customers who sing its praises. We can see why! It deserves a wider audience among the locals, so if you visit, be sure to mention that Life in Sale sent you!
