Valentine's Day ideas for couples, families and friends – The M33 edition

We know a lot of couples don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. We know this because you told us – 56% of respondents to one of our infamous Instagram polls stated that even though they were in a relationship, they opt to not celebrate 14 February with their partner.

But these days, more so than ever, you don’t need to be a couple to participate in Valentine’s celebrations. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of things to do for families, mates and couples alike.

Whether you’re looking for something that screams ‘romantic’, like a candlelit meal, or something a bit different, we hope you find something to spark the perfect activity.

For couples

Valentine’s Day was designed with you couples in mind, but we know that after a few years together, you might be running out of ideas.

😍 A big date night OUT

Get together to plan your ultimate date night. If you’re staying local in Sale and fancy something on the romantic side, restaurant highlights include Chez Nous Bistro, Greens Sale, The Fat Loaf, The Perfect Match and Petisco, who will be hosting a very special Portuguese-inspired six-course tasting menu and wine pairing on the night.  🇵🇹

Romance not really your thing and looking for a more relaxed vibe? Try Cowtown Grill, Mano a Bocca, Osechi Japanese, Pizzammore Napoli or Rudy’s

Making plans for your night out together can make the occasion even more exciting.

Fancy going for a drink after dinner? Any of Sale’s best independent bars will whet your whistle. A real favourite is to opt for a recommended wine flight at Cork of the North on Northenden Road.

If you can’t decide where to go or what to do, take it as an opportunity to be creative. Write up the options and pick them out of a hat or try tossing a coin!

Walton Perk

🌳 Get into nature

If you’re both nature lovers, why not head out for a walk or cycle? Whether local like the Bridgewater Canal (you can always stop off at Walton Perk for a beverage) or slightly further afield up to Dunham Massey, a walk is a great way to spend some time together.

🎨 Go to a class

Bet you’re reading this and thinking “really?!” Yes, really. Attending a class or workshop together can be a lot of fun, plus you might even find a new hobby and learn a new skill. Local makers including Sken Studios and Common Room Social Workshops often host a variety of classes. Workshops like this are a great opportunity to make some memories and take you out of your comfort zone (in a good way!)

💆‍♀️ Treat yourselves

Instead of buying each other a Valentine’s Day gift, combine your money and treat yourselves to a spa treatment. Go all out on massages, pampers and manicures – maybe even include a cheeky afternoon tea too.

A few of the most popular salons for massages in Sale include The B Company, Slow Beauty Concept located in Emporium M33 and Unique Thai Massage, which offers highly-rated couples massages.

If you’re not into ‘stuff’, these kinds of experiences together will be much more valuable.

🔥Some other quick-fire ideas:

  • Start the day right at one of the best places for breakfast in Sale

  • Have a movie day (watching your partner’s favourites only)

  • Buy tickets to see your other half’s favourite singer or band

  • Treat your plus one to a beautiful bouquet from one of Sale’s best florists

  • Ask your partner what their ideal day would look like and then make it a reality (you’ll notch up a few Brownie points for this one!)

  • Valentine’s balloons from Mintique Designs

For families

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about couples, especially if you have children who don’t want to miss out!

Sale has a host of family-friendly venues for you to explore, including Minikin Family Art Cafe and Bean & Brush.

Each ticket includes a cup and a coaster to paint.

🚃 Day trips that don’t take all day

Heading to Manchester city centre for a day out makes for a great Valentine’s Day. Being a tourist in your own city can be a lot of fun and you’d be surprised by how much you can explore and discover. Highlights in Manchester this year include Hamilton.
