REVIEW: Indian House, Sale
If you’re after high-quality, authentic Indian flavours served in a warm and vibrant setting, Indian House Sale is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss.
Opened in June this year, this charming restaurant is tucked just off the main high street, behind Stanley Square. Some might say it’s slightly off the usual track, but the quality of the food makes it stand out from the crowd.
The ambience manages to feel both intimate and lively, making it a spot that works whether you’re on a date, out with family or catching up with friends. Though the space comfortably accommodates larger groups, it doesn’t feel so vast that you’d get lost in the crowd. Instead, on busy evenings, the restaurant has a warm, buzzing energy that allows you to be part of the action. The decor is thoughtfully put together, giving it a modern yet distinctly Indian flair and it’s refreshingly photogenic without feeling forced.
Our dinner began with poppadams and dips (£3.99) - thin and crispy, as we’ve come to expect with a tray of chutneys. Next up with the vada pav (£6.99), a popular street food staple from Mumbai. This Indian burger features a fluffy pav packed with a crispy, golden-fried potato vada, complemented by tamarind and coriander chutneys that lend layers of sweet and tangy flavours. It’s a very generous portion for a starter and captures the authentic street food vibe with high-quality ingredients, making it an unmissable start to your meal.
The chilli chicken starter (£7.99) arrived looking like a main course! A plentiful portion of tender chicken, coated in a house spice blend and paired with onions and bell peppers, made for a very filling course. The dish was spicy, with just the right amount of heat, creating a good balance with the slightly sweet vegetables. It’s one of those dishes that you’ll find hard to share once you’ve had a taste!
For mains, we sampled the lamb tikka grill (£9.99) and chicken dum pot biryani (£12.49). The lamb was an instant table favourite – succulent, juicy and perfectly spiced. Each boneless cube was grilled over charcoal, lending a smoky depth that mixed beautifully with Indian House’s unique spice blend. It’s a dish that one would expect to come at a much higher price in other restaurants, but Indian House seems focused on offering quality dishes for remarkably reasonable prices.
The chicken dum pot biryani was equally impressive, made with fragrant basmati rice and masalas that added warmth and depth to each bite. A true Hyderabadi dish, this biryani was as authentic as it was delicious, perfect for sharing if you’ve ordered multiple dishes, though it’s tempting to keep it all to yourself.
To round out the meal, we opted for gulab jamun (£6.49). These deep-fried dumplings, soaked in a sweet, aromatic syrup, were exactly the kind of indulgent yet balanced dessert we needed to end the night. The portion of two dumplings was spot on, offering a satisfying sugar hit without overdoing it.
What about drinks, I hear you ask? Indian House boasts a sizable drinks menu featuring classic and signature cocktails, a range of beers, wines and non-alcoholic options. The thoughtful drink selection complements the spice-laden dishes, ensuring there’s something for every palate, whether you’re looking to try a mocktail or toast with a cocktail.
Indian House Sale excels not only in the quality and variety of its food but also in its friendly, attentive service. The staff seem genuinely excited to share the restaurant’s dishes and if you’re dining with vegetarians or have the family in tow, you’ll find the menu inclusive and varied enough to please everyone.
Indian House might be slightly tucked away from the main hustle of Sale’s high street, but it’s the kind of restaurant you’ll feel excited about introducing to friends and family. Give it a try!
