Beginner’s guide to cycling in Sale: free rides, training and bike repairs

Thinking about dusting off your bike and going for a ride? With brighter evenings, milder weather and plenty of local cycling routes to explore, there’s never been a better time to get into cycling in Sale.

Let's Ride - guided rides

Whether you're completely new to it or just haven’t ridden for a while, cycling is a brilliant way to boost your health, save money and enjoy your local area from a new perspective.

Here’s how to get started.

Join a free led ride

If the idea of riding alone feels a bit daunting, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to go it alone either. British Cycling’s Let’s Ride programme offers free, friendly group rides across Greater Manchester, including some in Sale.

Led by experienced ride leaders, these sessions are relaxed and social – perfect if you're looking to build confidence, meet others or get back in the saddle. Rides vary in length and ability and you can choose from mixed, women-only or family-friendly sessions.

Brush up on your skills with free cycle training

Want to feel more confident cycling on the road? Transport for Greater Manchester offers free cycle training for individuals and families of all abilities. From learning to ride for the first time to practising road safety and commuting routes, there's support to suit every level.

Training is led by qualified instructors and can be tailored to your needs – whether that’s learning to indicate, improving your balance or navigating traffic safely.

Need a bike check or repair

If your bike’s been sitting in the shed collecting cobwebs, it might need a bit of TLC before you set off. Luckily, there are great local options to get your bike road-ready:

Devereux Cycles – A trusted, long-established bike shop in Sale offering servicing, repairs and advice on new bikes and accessories.

Manchester Bike Kitchen – A not-for-profit, community-led workshop where you can learn basic bike maintenance or get expert help with repairs.

Both are friendly, knowledgeable places where beginners are always welcome.

Why start cycling?

Cycling isn’t just a way to get from A to B – it’s a way to feel better, explore more and spend time outdoors. Here are just a few of the benefits:

  • Improves fitness – It’s a low-impact way to strengthen your legs, lungs and heart.

  • Saves money – Swapping short car trips for bike rides can save you money on fuel and parking.

  • Reduces stress – Cycling through green spaces is a great mood-booster and helps clear your head.

  • Supports the environment – It’s a clean, green way to travel with zero emissions.

Connects you with nature – Explore places like the Bridgewater Canal towpath or the Trans Pennine Trail and discover parts of Sale and the wider area you might never have seen before.

Are you ready to ride?

Whether you’re fixing up a bike you already own, joining a led ride or learning the ropes through free training, getting into cycling is easier than you might think – and now’s the perfect time to give it a go.

See you on the towpath! 🚲
